Nestled in northwestern Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest region in the village of Clermont, Barnhaven is a creatively salvaged and renovated barn/home: the ongoing labor of love of a visionary ace carpenter and area local whose family roots go back 150 years.
We opened in May 2014.
An idyllic retreat from a hectic world, Barnhaven offers cozy respite for anyone with a desire to slow down, de-stress, and rediscover the restorative powers of nature. It is a perfect retreat for writers, artists, stargazers, fishermen, hikers, anyone! Unplug from daily demands and reconnect with the land and sky, or your personal muse. If you need a secluded work-retreat, look no further.
Long term stays can be arranged.
A study with a church pew opens to a wide, meditative view of the woods, while a wooden swing is set for sunset-viewing and sipping wine under the trees. The eastern-facing deck overlooks a garden and small pond with a trickling waterfall, and the open farm-style kitchen accommodates with modern appliances and rustic shelves of staples stored in vintage mason jars.
The barn’s original center bay is now a central foyer, off which a timber staircase leads up to a catwalk with 3 upstairs bedrooms (2 queen, one double). The living room has comfortable leather furniture and room to stretch out (including a separate sofa-bed for extra company). One upstairs bath and one downstairs both have tubs & showers, and a washer and dryer. (Due to the nature of the catwalk and stairs, and the fact that this IS a barn with old farming implements on display, please take into account any potential safety issues if you have young children, or old knees). Bookshelves abound with literature–from F. Scott Fitzgerald to guides on fishing, carpentry, and the backwoods lifestyle. Exposed beams, repurposed artifacts, and artfully salvaged and arranged tools and implements echo the simplicity and grace from an earlier time, while honoring the sweat of family ancestors.
Tucked away from the world, the barn is nevertheless close to scenic PA Route 6, county seat Smethport’s mansion district and Old Jail Museum, Bradford’s Zippo/Case Museum, and historic Kinzua Bridge State Park. This is the perfect spot to experience optimum stargazing, leaf-peeping, and geo-caching. (Not sure what geo-caching is? Think childhood treasure hunts: just add a GPS and set off into the wild). If curling up with a book, only to look up and see a family of wild turkeys or deer cross your line of vision is more your cup of tea, we offer that in abundance as well.
